On the evening of 24 October 2023, the BKS held a joint event with SOAS and invited guests along to the Brunei Gallery to hear the ‘Stories of Freedom’ belonging to three North Korean refugees.
Following a short video presentation, Kim Taehee, Eom Youngnam and Kim Eunju shared with those in attendance their heartfelt stories and their experiences in North Korea and settling in South Korea. The co-founder of humanitarian charity Freedom Speakers International, Casey Lartigue Jr. talked about his experiences of meeting refugees living in South Korea and the important work the organisation is doing to empower North Korean refugees to find their own voice and path through education, advocacy, and support. Also in attendance at the event was Park Jihyun, co-author of the recently published ‘Hard Road Out’ which records the harrowing story of one woman’s journey to escape famine and terror.
Following the speeches and the subsequent Q&A session, guests were treated to a networking reception and presented with the opportunity to speak with the speakers and to learn more about their continued efforts to raise awareness of North Korean Human Rights Issues.
