Obituary: Prof Karel Werner

A much respected Buddhist scholar, Prof Karel Werner, passed away on 26th November aged 94 years.

Prof Werner and his wife Marian were long time members and active supporters of the BKS. They loved to travel to Korea and enjoyed meeting Korean people and experiencing Korean food and culture. Prof Werner was a visiting lecturer at Dongkuk University.

Born in Czechoslovakia, Prof Werner came to England in 1968 and was appointed Spalding Lecturer in Indian Philosophy and Religion at Durham University. He had a distinguished career and publishing record and more recently was a member of the Study of Religions Department at SOAS University, studying Buddhist Philosophy, early Buddhism, and Hinduism.
