Mary Briggs
Mary Briggs is currently pursuing an MA in Korean studies with a focus on Korean literature at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London. Her research interests centre on religiosity, particularly Christianity, modernity, and postmodernity in South Korea. Her dissertation examines various narratives about South Korean modernity featured in Yi Mun Yeol’s Son of Man (사람의 아들), with a particular emphasis on depictions of Christianity and its place in the modern nation state.
She will use this bursary to take an advanced Korean language course in South Korea to further her linguistic skills in order to conduct both ethnographic and text-based research in the Korean language. She plans to pursue a PhD in religious studies upon completion of this language class.
