Hallyu Exhibition

at the Victoria & Albert Museum

Friday 28th April 2023

6.15 pm to 8.30 pm

The tour will begin in the Lobby at 6.15pm where we shall meet Rosalie Kim, the Curator of the Korean Gallery. We will meet in the Lobby under the large glass chandelier when you come through the Main Entrance on Cromwell Road.

The V&A have collected art and design objects from Korea since 1888 and opened the Korean Gallery in 1992 – the first permanent gallery devoted to Korean art in London. Among the displayed objects are a royal embroidered folding screen, sumptuous inlaid celadon bottles and metalwork, contemporary hanbok fashion, craft and design.

Rosalie will then take us on a private guided tour of the Korean Gallery and will give us a short talk on the Hallyu exhibition. You are free to go around and enjoy.

V&A’s landmark exhibition ‘Hallyu! The Korean Wave’ is the first exhibition of its kind to celebrate the colourful and dynamic popular culture of South Korea, following its early origins to its place on the global stage today. From K-Pop costumes to K-drama props and posters, alongside photography, sculpture, fashion, video and pop culture ephemera, the exhibition delves into the phenomenon known as ‘Hallyu’ – meaning ‘Korean Wave’. Hallyu rose to prominence in the late 1990s, rippling across Asia before reaching all corners of the world and challenging the currents of global pop culture today.

Afterwards about 8.00pm we shall be having an evening meal (your own cost) at a nearby restaurant where the Curator will be joining us. You will have an opportunity to put your questions to her.

There is no charge for the guided tour and the Hallyu! Exhibition.
