BKS Diners in New Malden

Dinner at You-me Korean Restaurant

New Malden is the UK’s Korea town. It is home to the largest concentration of Koreans in Europe. Over 20,000 Koreans, including 800 from North Korea (DPRK) call New Malden home. It also has some of the best Korean restaurants and supermarkets in the UK.

Before we headed for dinner we were treated to a guided tour of Korea town by Councillor Robert Kim who lives in New Malden. The route roughly followed a similar tour taken by King Charles when he recently visited New Malden. We went to Cake and Bingsoo, a popular café; the Methodist Church which acts as a social centre; and the Jubilee Garden where the flower beds grow herbs and vegetables. We also got to see Han Restaurant which featured in the wonderful BBC and Netfix drama Killing Eve.

We ate at You-me which is the oldest Korean restaurant in New Malden. The walls are decorated with autographed football shirts of the famous Koreans who have played in the UK and Europe. I also loved the Spanish poster featuring Psy, the famous Korean rapper, advertising soju.

Naturally, the food was spectacular. We all enjoyed Korean pancakes, wonderful spicy shrimp, Japchae, chicken stew, barbecued meat, superb Bibimbap and much more. I also really enjoyed the Makgeolli. You-me really lived up to the billing – it was superb.

Our thanks go to Councillor Robert Kim and Sylvia Park for their wonderful organisation. Can’t wait for the next one.
