Cholong Sung, University of Sheffield, Ph.D. Ethnomusicology
Cholong Sung is a Ph.D. candidate in Ethnomusicology at the University of Sheffield. She obtained her BA in Korean Traditional Music at Ewha Woman’s University (Majored in Kayagum), and her MA in Korean Music Theory at Seoul National University. Her master’s degree dissertation was “A Study of Seongdok (Lectio Devina, The sound of reading) from Musical Perspective.” Cholong’s PhD research explores the music and culture of the Korean diaspora in the UK through a comparative investigation into the musical activities of the three communities of Koreans living in the UK (South Koreans, North Koreans, and Korean-Chinese). It investigates what Korean music means to those Koreans and what influence it has on them. The Bursary will help towards the costs of fieldwork in London including train fares travelling between Sheffield and London and tickets for participating in musical festivals, and also covers some of the expenses for her interviews.
