Jake Bevan (PhD Candidate, University of Exeter)

Jake graduated with a BA (Hons.) in European and World Cinemas from the University of Exeter in 2008. He studied for the MA in Film Studies part-time over two years at King’s College London, passing with a distinction and graduating in 2012. His MA dissertation focussed upon the representations of Korea’s colonial period in the films from the time.

Jake is currently researching for a PhD in Film Studies at the University of Exeter. His project investigates the depiction of the colonial era in contemporary South Korean cinema, exploring issues of trauma, history and memory, as well as how these films are influenced by, and impact upon, contemporary Korean-Japanese relations.

Jake intends to use the Anglo-Korean Society Bursary to assist in the purchasing of research materials, as well as to allow him to undertake a research trip to South Korea in future.
