Welcome to Ambassador Park

The new Korean Ambassador, Ms Enna Park, was kind enough to invite four members of the committee of the British Korean Society for lunch on 12 September at her Residence in Kensington.  I congratulated her on her appointment, not least as the first female Ambassador from the Republic of Korea to serve in London.  It was especially heartening to hear the importance she placed on the Society’s work and on her role as Joint President.  She showed no hesitation in agreeing to be our guest of honour at the Society’s Annual Reception at the Houses of Parliament on 18 October, where the whole Society will have the opportunity to welcome her.

Much of our discussion centred on the Society’s work and its potential to be a convener in many fields of importance between the United Kingdom and the Republic of Korea.  We agreed to examine possible routes to enhance the Society’s role and how the Ambassador and the Embassy might be able to assist in those endeavours. It was certainly clear that the Ambassador’s previous role at the Foreign Ministry in Seoul, where she was responsible for public diplomacy, has left her with a deep understanding of this part of modern diplomacy as well as enthusiasm and imagination to take things forward energetically.

I am sure that we will enjoy a close and worthwhile relationship throughout the Ambassador’s posting in London and I know that all members of the Society will join me in wishing her every success and happiness here.
