Sebastian Lamp (PhD Candidate, SOAS, University of London)Sebastian LAMP

Sebastian recently completed the first year of his PhD in Ethnomusicology at SOAS, University of London. He received his undergraduate degree in Systematic Musicology from the University of Hamburg, and an MMus degree in Ethnomusicology from SOAS. His MMus dissertation on the 12 kasa, a Chosŏn-era song repertoire, received a 2013 AKS Thesis Grant. Sebastian’s PhD research concerns the closely related topic of pre-modern Korean sijo, with an emphasis on the musical dimension, as sijo were primarily a musical form in the past much like Korea’s other vernacular poetry traditions. The Bursary will be used towards his tuition fees at SOAS for the academic year 2014/15 which will be spent conducting fieldwork in Korea. His fieldwork research will focus on sijo performance after the colonial period as it has been practised in music institutions as well as in alternative scenes.
