Allan is currently completing his MA in Korean Literature and will begin his MPhil/PhD in the same field this Fall at SOAS, University of London. He obtained a BA in Korean (first class honours) at SOAS, during which he spent a year at Korea University. In 2010 he founded the Pegasus Society for Korean Studies (psfks.wordpress.com), which provides online courses and tuition of the Korean language and Korean studies subjects. Its courses have been created and delivered mostly by students and graduates of Korean Studies at SOAS. Allan’s research area for the proposed MPhil/PhD project is ‘queer’ studies in the context of contemporary South Korean literature, especially that of the writer Kim Hyesun and her novel Junk. He wrote his BA dissertation on sexual identity in the poetry of Ki Hyŏngdo (1960-1989), and for the MA has conducted research on the poet Hwang Inch’an (b. 1989) and contemporary writer Lee Eunmi (b. 1981). Allan intends to use the Bursary towards his travel costs to Korea and purchasing research materials.
