Welcome to Ambassador Hwang

Ambassador JoonKook HwangFollowing the sudden departure last autumn of Ambassador Lim, promoted to First Vice Foreign Minister, the ROK Embassy was for several months in the capable hands of the Deputy Chief of Mission. This spring however saw the arrival of Ambassador Joonkook Hwang, accompanied by his wife. The Society extends to them and their two daughters a very warm welcome and best wishes for a successful and enjoyable stay. In fact it’s a welcome back for the Ambassador and his wife, who served in the Embassy in London in the late 1980s/early 1990s – when I was on my second posting to Seoul.

Ambassador Hwang was quick to make contact with the BKS and to agree to become our Joint President. He has already made some helpful suggestions and is kindly spreading the word about our activities and sponsorship. He is at least the third ROK Ambassador to be posted to London after holding one of the most challenging posts at MOFA, that of Special Representative for Korean Peninsula Peace and Security Affairs. As well as two postings to the UN and one to Saudi Arabia, he has occupied some key jobs in Seoul including dealing with North East Asia, National Security issues in the President’s Office, North Korean nuclear affairs, and ROK-US Defence Burden-Sharing. His last position overseas was as Deputy Chief of Mission and Minister for Political Affairs in Washington. We look forward to seeing more of Ambassador Hwang and his family in the months to come.
