Last year saw a great shift in the situation on the Korean peninsula. North Korea stopped its provocative missile launches and nuclear tests and, in response, South Korea and U.S. halted an annual joint military exercise to help create an environment conducive to further negotiations. The South Korean Government has been pursuing a policy of resolving the North Korean nuclear issue in a peaceful manner and establishing a lasting peace on the Korean Peninsula. In diplomatic efforts to achieve this goal, the Republic of Korea has engaged with North Korea in close consultation with our key ally the US as well as with our neighbours China, Japan and Russia. Last year, there were three inter-Korean Summits and the first ever US-North Korea Summit. Against this backdrop, and with further negotiations expected this year, Ambassador Enna Park will attempt to address some of the opportunities and challenges for diplomacy on the Korean peninsula.
