On behalf of the Society I attended with my wife the Service of Thanksgiving for the life of Major General Mike Swindells CB, on 13 January at Holy Trinity Church, Sloane Square. As reported elsewhere on our website, Mike was the last President of the British Korean Veterans Association, from 2006 to 2014. After a distinguished military career he died last October aged 85 while swimming on holiday in Italy.

General Mike was a good friend of the BKS and of the ROK Embassy, as well as someone with whom I enjoyed working in recent years. He played an important part in the project to establish a Korean War Memorial on Victoria Embankment, which was unveiled in December 2014. The church was packed with friends, family and former military colleagues, including Korean War veterans, among them our Treasurer Peter Poole. A fitting eulogy was given by Major General Robin Searby, and two grandsons did a reading. Guests included official Representatives of TRHs the Duke of Gloucester and the Duke of York, as well as Viscount Slim, The Dowager Viscountess Rothermere, and senior members of the ROK Embassy. A splendid Guard of Honour greeted guests at the church entrance.
