Chuseok Celebration, 11 September 2014

On Thursday 11 September, some 60 BKS members were kindly entertained by the Ambassador of the Republic of Korea, HE Mr Sungnam Lim, at his fine residence near Kensington Gardens.

Not only were there excellent food and drink and an opportunity to catch up with old friends and make new ones, but Sylvia Park had arranged a short musical interlude with a kayageum and janggu duo which took many of us back to our times in Korea. The recital ended with a spirited rendering of Arirang, in which all were encouraged to join.

In Warwick Morris’ absence, our former Chairman Sir Stephen Brown spoke on behalf of the society, drawing attention to the major events of the year, notably the successful state visit by President Park Geun-hye to the UK and the award of the MBE to our Events Secretary, Sylvia Park – which provoked much appreciation from those present. He also mentioned the BKS contribution to the planned Korean War Memorial, which it is hoped will be unveiled in London towards the end of this year. Sir Stephen thanked the Ambassador and his colleagues for their continuing support and also acknowledged the important contributions from our corporate sponsors, Samsung and Diageo.

Replying, Ambassador Lim welcomed BKS members and also spoke about the state visit and congratulated Sylvia Park on her well-deserved award. Unfortunately he had to leave for another event at the Houses of Parliament, but Minister Kim Chang-mo and his colleagues ensured that we were well looked after for the rest of a very enjoyable evening.
